The Sharia Economic Community (MES) is expected to become the main drive for the development of the sharia economy, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.
“As a community organization, the Sharia Economic Community is expected to be the locomotive for the development of sharia economy, a down-to-earth system which directly impacts the people’s economy, produces more entrepreneurs among Islamic students (santri), and achieves an inclusive economy,” the President said at the Commemoration of the National Santri Day 2021 and the Launching of the New MES Logo at the State Palace, Jakarta, Friday (22/10).
The President also emphasized that as a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia must become a major player in the sharia economy and the halal industry as well as, the center of the world’s sharia economy.
“Based on data from the State of Global Islamic Economy Indicator Report, Indonesia’s sharia economic sector has experienced a significant growth. In 2018, Indonesia’s sharia economy was listed in the world’s top ten. In 2019, it was ranked 15th. And, as previously stated by the Vice President, in 2020 Indonesia’s sharia economy was ranked fourth in the world. It keeps rising,” he said.
President Jokowi went on to say that although the development of the sharia economy in the country is relatively fast, he reminded all stakeholders not to be complacent, while underscoring that the cooperation among stakeholders is needed so that the sharia economy in the country will grow even faster.
“That is an important role that the Sharia Economic Community must play. I have high expectation for the Sharia Economic Community to become a bridge for all sharia economic stakeholders, to build a sharia economic ecosystem in our country, and to build an inclusive economy that empowers us and is able to withstand various kinds of crises,” he said.
